The Library at Mount Char, by Scott Hawkins

I really liked it. Contemporary fantasy, lots of weirdness and WTF moments, decent plot. Reminded me a lot of American Gods by Neil Gaiman, and I was very impressed that it was the author's first novel. 4/5

Just finished readingborne, by Jeff vandermeer Before that the library at mount char, by Scott Hawkins Both were amazing. I had been in a kind of reading slump, reading lots of books but none of them blew me away. I was almost ready to take a break for a week or so but I'm glad I didnt. My only fear now is finding anything else that is even half as amazing as either of these books.

Even with my ridiculously busy work week I managed to finish this in 3 days. Throughly fucked up and enjoyable. And a great ending to boot!

The Library on Mount Char by Scott Hawkins It had been on my list forever and I'm disappointed in myself that I didn't pick it up sooner. So strange, messed up at times, but thoroughly enjoyable

Space Opera by Catherynne M. Valente She is one of my favorite authors but so far it is just too much. She has always been a ostentatiously descriptive writer and I loved her other works, especially Deathless and the Fairyland series, but I'm honestly not quite sure how I feel about this one yet. It just....a lot...

On a Pale Horse by Piers Anthony On deck. Can't wait

I usually gobble books down without much thought, but I finished this one a couple days ago and it's been on my mind ever since. It gives an interesting look 'behind the scenes' about a few of life's greater mysteries.

Finish reading The Library at Mount Char, by Scott Hawkins. It was a random pick from my book list and one of the better books I've read so far this year.

Started reading The Road, by Cormac McCarthy.

Finished:

The Library at Mount Char, by Scott Hawkins - I liked it. I wasn't blown away but it was an interesting premises and the writing was technically solid. The epilogue was unnecessary and took away from the beautiful simplicity of the ending. It honestly left a sour taste in my mouth for the book - it was like his publisher recognized that the character was likely to be a fan favourite and directed him to tack on a finish to his story. It didn't belong.

Currently reading Senlin Ascends, by Josiah Bancroft. I’ve enjoyed it so far, hope I like the ending as well. After that I’ll pick up The Library at Mount Char, by Scott Hawkins.

Finished: The Library at Mount Char, by Scott Hawkins. As someone commented last week when I started this book: ”it is a RIDE”. Couldn’t agree more.

Started: The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers. It’s taken me a while to get into the happy feeling of this book, after reading several dark fantasy books in a row it’s strange when someone’s not dead by page 10. I’m enjoying it now though!

What a fun book to read! I like weird stuff, and this one delivered. Mentioning a specific genre on this would give away the story, but I think the apt hook for this is "cosmic horror with a fun twist."

Finished:

Warlight, by Michael Ondaatje - it was a beautifully written book with an interesting premises. That being said, it was boring. It took me days longer to read then it should have for that reason. I would have preferred to have the story told from his sister's side, she seemed more interesting.

Winter Loon, by Susan Bernhard - heartbreaking, beautifully written, engaging. I cried at the end which is not my usual thing. 5/5 - completely loved it.

Started and finished The Library at Mount Char, by Scott Hawkins today. I really wasn't expecting much based on the blurb, but I grabbed it from the library because I'll read pretty much anything with secret orders of librarians involved.

It turned out to be a really weird, fun, and fairly gruesome read that I couldn't put down.
